Symbio Kunstprijs 2023

For whom

For the third time, Stichting Symbio is organizing an open call for the Symbio Kunstprijs. The foundation strongly invites visual artists who can offer new perspectives on ingrained traditions. Creators who have the courage to depict a world in transition towards a sustainable future.

Collaboration Oerol Festival and Arcadia-Paradys

This open call is a collaboration between the Symbio Foundation, the Oerol Festival and Arcadia-Paradys. The winning work will be presented for ten days in June 2025 during Oerol (Terschelling) and then, until the end of August 2025, at the international visual art exhibition Paradys (Leeuwarden), which is part of Arcadia 2025. The assessment of the entries will consider how and to what extent the design relates to the special location at Oerol, but also to what extent the work can be moved and/or re-realized at Paradys. This will of course be discussed with the winning artist.

The jury

The professional jury consists of Marin de Boer (creative producer Expedition program Oerol), Jan Pieter Ekker (chief art editor of Het Parool), Hans den Hartog Jager (art critic and artistic director Paradys 2025), Judith Spijksma (curator of Modern Art at the Fries Museum), and Zoro Feigl (visual artist). Hein de Graaf (visual artist) and Gemma Reuten (chair) are representing Stichting Symbio. The coordinator is Marijke Tiemersma (Hollandse Luchten).

The prize

In addition to all the exposure at both events, the prize consists of two monetary awards: an amount of €7,500 as an artist's fee and an amount of a maximum of €15,000 for the realization of the work of art. Both amounts include VAT. The location, time and duration of the artwork or project to be realized for the realization of the artwork is the responsibility of the Symbio Foundation. The submission must include a project plan plus budget that includes realization costs and fees. See further under conditions.

Closing date

Entries can be submitted until November 1st, 2024. Entries received after November 1st 2024 will not be included.

Guidance for the artist(s)

The designer of the winning work will be guided in terms of content, artistry and production during the realization process by the Symbio Foundation, Oerol Festival and Arcadia-Paradys.
